On September 25, 2023, the esteemed UMFST-UMCH Campus in Hamburg celebrated the inauguration of the Academic Year 2023/24 with an official Opening Ceremony held in its auditorium. The event saw the presence of eminent personalities, including the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoană and the Romanian Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Adriana Stanescu.
Mircea Geoană, in his riveting address, extended a global viewpoint to the ceremony. He conveyed his admiration for the youthful ambition displayed by individuals from around the globe, emphasizing that the reins of humanity’s future lay in their hands. His speech resonated with the profound belief in the transformative essence of education and science, alongside the critical necessity of ethical considerations in technological advancements. Geoană lauded Hamburg as Germany’s “pearl” and recognized the university’s distinctive stature as an Eastern European institution nestled in Europe’s core.
Similarly, H.E. Adriana Stanescu, in her lively address, highlighted the solid ties between Germany and Romania, rooted in longstanding tradition and camaraderie, which are continually strengthened on economic fronts as well. She expressed her pride in the collaborative endeavor that is UMFST-UMCH, extending her gratitude towards all contributors.
UMFST Rector Prof. Leonard Azamfirei initiated the ceremony, stressing the remarkable opportunities the university lays out for student personal development. He underscored the collaborative ethos of the UMFST-UMCH Campus and reminded students of their significant role in molding their educational journeys.
Assoc. Prof. Simona Mureșan, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in English, delivered an energizing speech that showcased UMFST-UMCH’s devotion to values like diversity, equity, inclusion, tradition and community engagement. She warmly welcomed the first-year students, urging them to immerse themselves in the university’s flourishing academic atmosphere.
Christopher Musmann, the Managing Director of the UMFST-UMCH Campus, drew fascinating analogies between NATO’s inception and the emergence of UMFST-UMCH. He pinpointed the vital role of NATO in fostering multilateral, peaceful relations among its member nations. In this vein, he spotlighted NATO’s peace-maintaining role in Europe since its inception, setting the groundwork for UMFST-UMCH’s multinational ethos.
Representatives from the Student Council of the Hamburg Campus, Baraneh Salamat and Lucas Glaser, in their heartening address to the first-year students, emphasized the importance of balancing academic rigor with rejuvenation. They applauded the university’s exemplary educational paradigm, particularly its high practical orientation compared to other institutions.
Julika Tan, a fifth-year student, adeptly moderated the ceremony. It was aesthetically enhanced with a musical performance by third-year student Alexander Scheibner, adding a harmonious touch to this significant academic kickoff.
