Nautical Science
Introduction to Nautical Science
Nautical Science is a specialized field focusing on the art and science of ship operations and navigation. It encompasses various disciplines, including navigation, ship handling, cargo operations, and maritime law. Professionals in this domain ensure vessels’ safe and efficient movement across the world’s oceans.
Educational Pathways in Nautical Science
Pursuing a career in Nautical Science typically begins with enrolling in a structured educational program. The Cyprus Maritime Academy (CyMA) offers a comprehensive degree program in the subject. This four-year program is meticulously designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel as officers in charge of a navigational watch on merchant ships. The curriculum aligns with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) International Convention, ensuring graduates meet global maritime industry standards.
Program Structure and Curriculum in Nautical Science
The BSc in Nautical Science at CyMA combines theoretical instruction with practical training. Students delve into navigation, ship stability, meteorology, and maritime safety. A significant program component is the 12-month onboard practical placement, where cadets gain hands-on experience as active crew members on merchant vessels. Upon successful completion, graduates receive:
- A Certificate of Competence (CoC) as an Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch from the Cyprus Maritime Academy.
- A BSc in Nautical Science from Intercollege.
Career Prospects for Graduates
Graduates of this program have a direct career progression path in the maritime industry. Upon graduation, they start as a 3rd Officer or Captain Class C. They can advance to positions such as 2nd Officer (Chief Mate or Captain Class B) and 1st Officer (Master or Captain Class A). This progression is contingent upon gaining experience and passing the required examinations.
Financial Support and Scholarships for Nautical Science Students
Understanding the financial commitments associated with maritime education, CyMA, in collaboration with Intercollege, offers various financial support options:
- Cadet Scholarship Program (CSP): This initiative, in partnership with shipping companies and other maritime sector affiliates, provides scholarships to newly enrolled cadets. The program aims to support students who meet specific socio-economic and academic criteria.
- Cadets’ Funding Plan: An optional plan covering two-thirds of the tuition fees after completing the first year. This funding is provided through agreements between cadets and participating shipping companies.
Admission Criteria for Nautical Science Programs
Prospective students aiming to enrol in the program must meet specific admission requirements:
- Possession of a Senior School Leaving Certificate or a qualification equivalent to that with an average grade of 15 out of 20 or 75%.
- English language skills of at least 5.5 in IELTS or equal, as the medium of instruction is English.
Tuition and Additional Fees for Nautical Science Studies
The annual tuition fee for the program is €7,200. All cadets are eligible for a remarkable 20% reduction in tuition fees for their first year, bringing the cost down to €5,760. Additionally, cadets must procure the official CyMA uniform package during their first semester, which is expected to cost approximately €400.
State-of-the-Art Training Facilities for Nautical Science Students
CyMA is committed to providing cadets with top-notch training facilities. First-year students participate in mandatory practical training at Limassol’s BSM Maritime Training Centre. This hands-on experience ensures cadets are well-prepared for real-world challenges during their sea placements and future careers.
