Becoming a nurse in Germany is one of the most prestigious professions. Let’s look into the Ausbildung program before entering into nursing in Germany.
Nursing is a broad area where people can work in various medical and social professions. Not just in Germany, nurses are needed all over the world.
Ausbildung is an apprenticeship in Germany that was founded in 2020. Germany was facing skilled employee shortages in various industries. So, Germany came up with a dazzling plan.
Ausbildung was born!
Ausbildung is a training program where international students can choose which profession they desire and undergo a training program for three years.
During these three years, they are trained theoretically and practically. Once the training is over, the student learns about the profession and has hands-on experience in that same profession.
Nursing training makes them highly qualified to land a good-paying job in the future.
Now let us learn more about nursing studies in Germany.
As discussed before, this training is for three years. One can transform into a nursing specialist at the end of three years.
It doesn’t matter where the student attends the training, as it can occur in hospitals, retirement homes, clinics, and other institutions. It can be in a technical school for health, geriatric care school, or a nursing school. Theory classes are mixed with practical orientations to gain a better experience.
The school will teach the difference between inpatient and outpatient care. They will also distinguish acute and long-term care.
Acute care is for those who encountered an accident and need support as they recover.
Long-term care is for those who might need help for the rest of their lives because of a chronic problem.
Every person is different. Sometimes the patients might behave indifferently. The nurses should be extremely professional when dealing with these situations.
This is taught during the training period on dealing with different sects of people. It can range from working with children to working with the disabled or elderly.
Now let’s move on to an overview of how the training might unfold.
Training (1st year)
It starts with the basic training, where the trainees share their expectations and experiences through group discussions. The history of nursing and social importance are studied as well.
As a lack of exercise can lead to personal immobility, the trainees learn exercise concepts. Other skills like help with eating, observation of vitals, and personal hygiene are added to that. Trainees are trained for documentation processes.
Then comes the difficulty of helping the sick person in either washing or eating. Trainees might find this uncomfortable or disturbing. So, classes are taken to learn how to deal professionally with their emotions.
Training (1st-3rd year)
The trainees have to deal with health inequalities. The nurse needs to be healthy to take good care of the patients. Another study is the paradox between the level of a patient’s determination and the level of caregiver’s care to the patient.
Nurses should make immediate decisions when the patient behaves alarmingly suddenly. This is taught in the curative process. Some topics in this field are correct nursing diagnosis, communication with doctors, advising patients, medical knowledge, the structure of the care process, patient consultation, wound management, and infection prevention.
They also train the nurses for sudden emergencies on how to respond. Immediate action is required as the patient’s life is at stake. Organ donation and living wills are discussed at this moment.
Rehabilitation is one of the important aspects of nursing. Trainees are taught to deal with people having chronic problems and accidents. They have to work closely with a professional team of doctors, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists.
The practical training will occur in the sponsored healthcare clinic (hospital). As per the clinic’s type, the trainee will have a specific specialisation during their training. It can be acute, long-term care in hospitals, outpatient nursing services, and long-term care in a nursing home.
Being a trainee in the clinic, the trainee will work in a retirement home, psychiatric care, outpatient nursing service, and child care to gain experience. The trainee will learn from all areas of care to gain experience.
